   Designers in Residence 2012 Competition

   The Design Museum has opened its new program called “Designers in Residence”. It is ready for applications now. The residency is going to support and encourage the selected designers at the beginning of their career, giving them a possibility to construct on their present design practice and promote new or presently developing projects.
   The deadline for designers applications is the 20th of February, 2012.
It has always been more complicated to design a product which will be worth £10 than to create the same product which is worth £1000. The economy limitations demand inspired, resourceful and smart usage of materials and procedures and a successful work becomes often a more creative and fully resolved outcome.
   The present competition searches for products, different kinds of furniture, graphics, interaction or spatial designers to discover the idea of resourcefulness and economy in an object, an experience or an environment for their Designers in Residence 2012 projects. All the works later will be shown in a specially prepared exhibition which will take place in the Design Museum, London, GB.
   Work created for the exhibition will be on display between 29 August 2012 – 27 January 2013. Designers will not be able to remove material prior to that date. All exhibited works will be available for collection from the Design Museum at the close of the exhibition unless the exhibition goes on to tour. If the exhibition tours to other venues in the UK, work created for the exhibition will be kept by the Design Museum until the close of the tour after which the work will be available for collection from the Design Museum. After the exhibition and residency, featured Designers in Residence will be permitted to showcase/promote the work created for the commission/exhibition, however any such promotion must clearly credit that it was commissioned as part of the Designers in Residence 2012 programme.
   Following the successful completion of the residency, the selected Designers in Residence will each receive a bursary to support the development of their career. As part of the residency, designers will be required to attend the press and private views for the exhibition and to participate in other activities in support of the launch and promotion of the programme. The featured designers will also be asked to participate in events which engage with the Design Museum’s audience via networking, press interviews and opportunities, events and the public and learning programme. Details of these events are tbc but may include attendance and participation in at least two events in the lead up to the exhibition opening (between May and August 2012) and three events throughout the course of the exhibition (i.e. between September 2012 and 27 January 2013).
